Decided by the Press Ombudsman

The Press Ombudsman has ruled on a complaint made by Ms Cynthia Owen that the Irish Examiner breached Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy), Principle 2 (Distinguishing Fact and Comment), Principle 3 (Fair Procedures and Honesty) and Principle 4 (Respect for Rights) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland.  He has decided not to uphold parts of the complaint, that there was insufficient evidence to make a decision on other parts and that sufficient action was offered by the newspaper to resolve two elements of the complaint. 

The Press Ombudsman has not upheld a complaint made by Mr Stephen Walsh that the Sunday World breached Principle 7 (Court Reporting) and Principle 8 (Prejudice) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland.

The Press Ombudsman has not upheld a complaint by Professor Ray Bates that the Village magazine breached Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy), Principle 4 (Respect for Rights) and Principle 8 (Prejudice) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland.

The Press Ombudsman has upheld a complaint made by Emerald Business Consulting Limited and Mr Danny Cox that an article published by The Irish Times breached Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) and Principle 3 (Fair Procedures and Honesty) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland.

The Press Ombudsman has not upheld a complaint by Mr Brian O’Donnell and his family that the Irish Independent breached Principle l0 (Publication of Decisions) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland.

The Press Ombudsman has not upheld a complaint by Mr Paul Murphy TD that The Irish Times breached Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland. 

The Press Ombudsman has not upheld a complaint made by a woman that the Irish Daily Mail breached Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland.

The Press Ombudsman has not upheld a complaint made by the Corofin Castle Heritage Park that the Connacht Tribune breached Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy), Principle 2 (Distinguishing Fact and Comment), Principle 3 (Fair Procedures and Honesty) and Principle 4 (Respect for Rights) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland.

The Press Ombudsman has upheld a complaint made by Mr Brian O’Donnell and his family that the Irish Independent, in its print and online editions, breached Principle 5 (Privacy) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland. 

The Press Ombudsman has not upheld a complaint made by Mr Finbar O’Rourke that the Sunday World breached Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy), Principle 2 (Distinguishing Fact and Comment), Principle 3 (Fair Procedures and Honesty) and Principle 5 (Privacy) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland.
