Decided by the Press Ombudsman

The Press Ombudsman has not upheld a complaint that the Irish Independent breached Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland.

The Press Ombudsman has decided that The Irish Times offered to take action which was sufficient to resolve a complaint that Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) and Principle 4 (Respect for Rights) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland had been breached in an opinion piece published by the newspaper.

The Press Ombudsman has decided that the Leitrim Observer took action which was sufficient to resolve a complaint where it was found that the newspaper had breached Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) and Principle 2 (Distinguishing fact and Comment) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland.

The Press Ombudsman had upheld a complaint by a woman that Independent.ie breached Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland.

The Press Ombudsman has not upheld a complaint that the Sunday Independent breached Principle 8 (Prejudice) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland.

The Press Ombudsman has not upheld a complaint made by Mr Sean Fenton that The Irish Times breached Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) and Principle 3 (Fair Procedures and Honesty) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland.

The Press Ombudsman has upheld a complaint by a woman (who has asked that her name should not be published*) that Extra.ie breached Principle 5 (Privacy) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland. Claims that Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) and Principle 4 (Respect for Rights) were breached are not upheld. The Press Ombudsman also found that he has insufficient evidence to make a decision on a claim that Principle 3 (Fair Procedures and Honesty) was breached.

The Press Ombudsman has decided that The Irish Times took sufficient remedial action to resolve a complaint made by Ryanair under Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) and Principle 2 (Distinguishing Fact and Comment) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland.

On 25 June 2018 the Press Ombudsman upheld a complaint made by Mr Sheehy that Village breached Principle 4 (Respect for Rights) of the Code of Practice. He decided that he had insufficient evidence to make a decision on claims of a breach of Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy).
