Decision of the Press Council

At its meeting on 11th June the Council decided to admit the appeal for consideration as a significant question regarding the interpretation of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Periodicals was raised.

The Council had a comprehensive discussion on the interpretation and meaning of Principle 1.3 “When appropriate, a retraction, apology, clarification, explanation or response shall be published promptly and with due prominence.” The Council concluded that this principle does not confer an absolute right to accompany a correction or apology with any clarification or explanation.

The Decision of the Press Ombudsman was upheld.
