Decided by the Press Ombudsman

The Press Ombudsman has decided not to uphold a complaint by members of staff at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital that two articles published about events at the hospital in October last were in breach of Principle 1.2 (Truth and Accuracy) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines. The subject of both articles was the circumstances surrounding the death at the hospital of an acutely ill person who had been brought to the hospital by family members in the early hours of the morning.

The Press Ombudsman has decided not to uphold a complaint made by Mr William Mongey about an article published in the newspaper on 11 March 2011.

The Press Ombudsman has decided that the Drogheda Independent made an offer of sufficient remedial action to resolve a complaint from a family about the publication of a news report relating to the accidental death of a family member.

The Press Ombudsman has decided that the Irish Independent has made an offer of remedial action sufficient to resolve a complaint by the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland that three articles published in that newspaper on 12 October 2010 breached Principles 1 (Truth and Accuracy) and 2 (Distinguishing Fact and Comment) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines.

The Press Ombudsman has decided that the Irish Examiner made an offer of sufficient remedial action to resolve a complaint by a man that two articles in the newspaper were in breach of Principles 1 (Truth and Accuracy) and 4 (Respect for Rights) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines. A number of other complaints were not upheld.

The Press Ombudsman has decided not to uphold a complaint made by Ms Patricia McCafferty that an article published in the Donegal Democrat on 9 September 2010 breached Principles 1 (Truth and Accuracy) and 2 (Distinguishing Fact and Comment) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines.

The Press Ombudsman has decided that the Irish Daily Mail made an offer of sufficient remedial action to resolve a number of complaints made by the Rev. Guy and Mrs Heather Chave-Cox about breaches of Principles 1 (Truth and Accuracy), of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines in articles published on 23, 24 and 27 August 2010. A number of other complaints were not upheld.

Guy and Mrs Heather Chave-Cox that a number of articles in the Irish Independent about a property in Co Sligo in which Mrs Chave-Cox has an interest were in breach of Principles 1 (Truth and Accuracy) and 4 (Respect for Rights) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines. A number of other complaints were not upheld.

The Press Ombudsman has upheld a complaint by the Rev. Guy Chave-Cox that an article about him in the Irish Mail on Sunday on 29 August 2010 was in breach of Principles 1 (Truth and Accuracy), 2 (Distinguishing Fact and Comment) and 4 (Respect for Rights) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines. A number of other complaints about the article were not upheld.

The Press Ombudsman has upheld a complaint by the Rev. Guy Chave-Cox that statements about him in an article in The Sunday Times on 29 August 2010 about property in Rosses Point, Co. Sligo, in which his wife has a beneficial interest, were in breach of Principles 1 (Truth and Accuracy), 2 (Distinguishing Fact and Comment) and 4 (Respect for Rights) of the Code of Practice for Newspapers and Magazines. A number of other complaints were not upheld.
