The Office of the Press Ombudsman endeavours, in the first instance, to resolve all complaints through a process of conciliation. Part of the conciliation process may take the form of mediation. Mediation is a meeting between the editor and the complainant, with the Case Manager acting as facilitator. It is strictly confidential, and it offers both the complainant and the editor the opportunity to reach a resolution to the complaint. Mediation takes place only if both parties are agreeable.
If it is not possible to resolve the matter through mediation, all aspects of the mediation process remain strictly confidential to the parties concerned, and are not documented in any manner, or communicated to any third party, including the Press Ombudsman and Press Council. The editor is then invited to submit a formal response to the complaint, and any alleged breach of the Code of Practice, in writing.
